My husband and I travel 10 hours to reach our haven – typically 8 hours on the road, a cumulative hour of stops, and an hour long ferry ride.  For the last three years I have tried to find the purrfect carrier for our two feline stowaways. One is a great traveler, his brother, not so much. The first year my husband threatened to jump ship because of his relentless screaming. Not meowing, screaming!

That year I used the standard plastic shell with metal grids I’d transported them in as kittens. The next year, having outgrown the original carrier, I went longer, wider and taller, yet we discovered too late it was darker and I felt claustrophobic just putting them in it!

This year in preparation of our beach expedition, I checked out carrier/crate options and was intrigued by a playpen style by Elitefield.  Octagon in shape, this nylon and mesh soft playpen offered a brighter, more comfortable space. Even the smallest size, allowed room for a small litter box, 20 lbs of cat (2 busy Orientals), better ventilation, and fit easily behind the driver seat on the SUV bed.  It’s lightweight and set up very quickly. The full sized zippered doors allowed easy access for me to reach in and so far they haven’t figured out how to unzip! The floor is removable for easy washing and the top of the playpen was strong enough to hold up as a hammock at our location – although I’m not sure that was Elitefield’s intent.  Since our trip it’s remained in my vehicle and I’ve used it to transport one cat to the vet, so I can’t tell you how easy it is to fold and get back in the provided carrying bag. I can tell you our screamer was a better traveler this time. Was he better with this being his third trip and the added calming remedies? Maybe, but I think I’ll stay with the playpen when travelling with him.
